Background & Info on Science of Diversity:
This is an initiative aimed at exploring the causes and consequences of diversity in multiple domains using social and behavioral science research. The goal is to promote discussion, rooted in social science research, about the impact of diversity in the natural and physical sciences. This initiative seeks to disseminate research not just to the Lamont community on the impact of diversity on scholarly excellence, but to the greater scientific community as a whole. Past research has shown that greater educational benefits are associated with more diverse academic communities.
The first Science of Diversity Symposium at Columbia was held in November 2006 and was sponsored by the Provost’s Task Force on Diversity in Science & Engineering, the Earth Institute NSF-ADVANCE Program, the Department of Psychology, and the Offices of the Vice Provost for Diversity Initiatives and the Executive Vice President for Research. Speakers included Alan Brinkley, Provost, and Geraldine Downey, Vice-Provost of Diversity Initiatives. The event was attended by over 200 people and received media coverage.
